Gap Year

Gap Year travel: Choosing the right destination

Have you always been looking forward to travelling abroad, leaving your home in the UK, USA or Europe behind for a while? Experience a new culture perhaps? Or maybe you’ve just wanted to go somewhere beautiful and different to get away from the city that you live in, leave your stress and worries for a few weeks. Whatever the reasons for your GAP year travel, you can make it an unforgettable experience! Gap year travel is taken not just by students, but also by working people and professionals. It can be a daunting prospect, especially if this is your first time leaving home, as there is a lot of planning to be done.

When it comes to choosing the right place for Gap year travel or a career break, it all depends on what you want to gain out of the experience. What is it you would like to do?

If you are an adrenaline junkie and love adventure, there are several places that you could choose from. New Zealand is known for various fun activities, and several other countries too have activities such as white water rafting, bungee jumping and skydiving to name a few.

If you wish to simply go around sightseeing or enjoy the beach, you could always try a tropical country such as Asia or the Far East, which are known for its great beaches! Europe would also be a great option during the summer if you wish to visit famous sites.

If you wish to study a particular language, study its history or learn to cook, nothing can beat being taught by that country’s nationals. French cooking in France, Greek history in Greece or learn to be fluent in Italian by going to Italy! You could even choose to teach English in Asia or Africa.

If you are going on your holiday for the purpose of voluntary work, then choosing your country would mainly depend on the case that you wish to work for. Typically you should choose the country that most needs your help or would help you really contribute by making a difference, such as which country focuses on dealing with wildlife conservation and the white tiger in particular, or which country needs the most awareness raising and is greatly affected by AIDS. This all depends on your area of interest. However, if there’s one country you wish to visit in particular and would like to help out with anything in general, you could always look for an organization that takes in volunteers in that country.

Although these ideas sound great, it will only work for you if you are able to afford it. Always think about the cost and your budget before deciding on your gap year travel destination.

Always keep in mind, however, that before you go you would need to look into things such as safe accommodation, other facilities, any health hazards and precautions that you would have to take and of course other vital things such as insurance. As the regulations in each country may differ, you need to have a good understanding of what to expect, especially if you are traveling to a different continent.
